The Last Magicianby Lisa Maxwell

On Sale Date: July 18, 2017

**I received this as an e-galley from Simon Pulse through Edelweiss in return for an honest review.**

My Rating: ★★★★★ (4.5 out of 5 stars)

Synopsis:

Stop the Magician.
Steal the book.
Save the future.

In modern day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1901 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.  Continue reading “Book Review: The Last Magician, by Lisa Maxwell”

Personal

I won something???

So recently I entered the Devil’s Own contest for The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell (thelastmagician.com) and I ended up winning the Delphi’s Tear Pendant for Round 4!!!  And my name is also going to appear in the acknowledgements for book 2!  I don’t know if this was a mistaken e-mail or not though, because my name isn’t on the official list of winners for that particular prize, so if it was, my reply is probably just going to be awkwardly embarrassing…

Anyway, I will add a link to my review for The Last Magician in just a hot second, because I actually need to transfer it to this blog first. Edit: here’s the link!

Sorry, this is random, I’m just so damn excited!!

#24in48 Update

So I read for about 6 hours and 48 minutes today, but considering I only just found out about this read-a-thon this morning, I am going to go ahead and be okay with that.  Also I got distracted midway through when my LitJoyCrate arrived and I ended up doing an unboxing.

Anyway, I read The Wood by Chelsea Bobulski, and got to about 82% done with it (I started the day at 10%).  I have about an hour left according to my Kindle reading time calculator, but I’m getting tired and easily distracted so I’m just going to go to sleep and finish it tomorrow (I also have work in the morning so there’s that too).  I was originally really intrigued by the story in The Wood, but the relationship drama was a little predictable from the get-go, so that’s kind of making me a little disinterested in it.

Anyway, that’s all I did for the read-a-thon unfortunately.  I might get a few more hours in tomorrow, but I’m working an 8 hour shift so I doubt it will be much if I do.

An unboxing: LitJoyCrate

Today’s unboxing: the July LitJoyCrate!

I’ve been an on-again-off-again subscriber to LitJoy for almost a year now, and I absolutely love how they theme their boxes to the book itself.  This month’s theme was “Sleight of Hand” and I must say it was perfect!  I kind of figured out what the book was, since I read an egalley of it, and was not disappointed in the least.  They also feature an artist for each box and this month it was Stephanie Brown of offbeatworlds!

Alright, spoilers ahead!!!

#24in48

So luckily for me, I just discovered the #24in48 read-a-thon this morning!  I mean, it would have been better if I had discovered it earlier, but hey it’s never too late, right?

Last night I had told myself I needed to spend more time reading today, and look, incentive!!  So I decided to sign up!

The goal of the read-a-thon is to read for at least 24 hours in a 48 hour window of time (from Saturday Jul 22nd to Sunday July 23rd.)  I can guarantee now that I probably won’t be getting all 24 hours in because I have work tomorrow, but I can try.  Sadly it’s also almost 11am where I am right now so that puts me a little behind.

Anyway, I am planning on reading The Wood by Chelsea Bobulski for the most part, and hopefully some more of A Conjuring of Light and Just One Damned Thing After Another.

Now to answer to the intro survey questions:

  1. Where in the world are you reading from this weekend? I am from New Jersey, USA!
  2. Have you done the 24in48 readathon before?  Nope!  First Time!  I’ve done a 24 hour read-a-thon though!  Don’t think I finished that one….
  3. Where did you hear about the readathon, if it is your first?  I saw it trending on twitter!
  4. What book are you most excited about reading this weekend? Probably The Wood and A Conjuring of Light (if I get to it)
  5. Tell us something about yourself.  Um…I’m a full-time bookseller and freelance lighting designer who is inconveniently afraid of heights 🙂
  6. Remind us where to find you online this weekend.  Here, twitter, instagram, and sometimes tumblr!

I’m looking forward to all the reading I am hopefully going to get done this weekend!!
