Synopsis:

Hunt the Stones.
Beware the Thief.
Avenge the Past.

Esta’s parents were murdered. Her life was stolen. And everything she knew about magic was a lie. She thought the Book of Mysteries held the key to freeing the Mageus from the Order’s grasp, but the danger within its pages was greater than she ever imagined.

Now the Book’s furious power lives inside Harte. If he can’t control it, it will rip apart the world to get its revenge, and it will use Esta to do it.

To bind the power, Esta and Harte must track down four elemental stones scattered across the continent. But the world outside the city is like nothing they expected. There are Mageus beyond the Brink not willing to live in the shadows—and the Order isn’t alone in its mission to crush them.

In St. Louis, the extravagant World’s Fair hides the first stone, but an old enemy is out for revenge and a new enemy is emerging. And back in New York, Viola and Jianyu must defeat a traitor in a city on the verge of chaos.

As past and future collide, time is running out to rewrite history—even for a time-traveling thief.

My Review:

I absolutely adored reading The Last Magician last year so of course this was going to be one of my most anticipated releases this year. I loved Maxwell’s world-building in this first one, and it continued to be just as great in this one, if a little more confusing with some new information, and of course the characters are definitely what kept me going. There were some flaws, though, and it did feel like it dragged a bit at times, but overall I was mostly content with it as a sequel. Join The Devil’s Own

As you know, I adored The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell.  Last year she held a competition for the promotion of it, and this year she is doing it again for The Devil’s Thief.  There are chances to win amazing swag and even a signed ARC of the book itself (and the grand prize is a signed finished copy!  I think…I read that right, didn’t I?).  Anyway, last year I entered and won one of the jewel prizes and my name is also in the acknowledgements of TDT (I checked the ARC I got and squealed a bit).

So what are you waiting for?  Enter the contest now!

Monthly Wrap-Up

July 2017 | Books Read This Month

This month I sadly only managed to read 5 books, and only one of which works for Beat the Backlist (Twefth Night).  Three were egalleys and one was a reread.

The books I enjoyed most were definitely Twefth Night and The Last Magician.  TN was yet another Shakespearian comedy I loved, and TLM slowly dug its nails into until I was completely in love by the end.  I’m hoping to get more read this month, especially since I have a lot of egalleys and ARCs to get through…

The Last Magicianby Lisa Maxwell

On Sale Date: July 18, 2017

**I received this as an e-galley from Simon Pulse through Edelweiss in return for an honest review.**

My Rating: ★★★★★ (4.5 out of 5 stars)

Synopsis:

Stop the Magician.
Steal the book.
Save the future.

In modern day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1901 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.  Continue reading “Book Review: The Last Magician, by Lisa Maxwell”

Personal

I won something???

So recently I entered the Devil’s Own contest for The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell (thelastmagician.com) and I ended up winning the Delphi’s Tear Pendant for Round 4!!!  And my name is also going to appear in the acknowledgements for book 2!  I don’t know if this was a mistaken e-mail or not though, because my name isn’t on the official list of winners for that particular prize, so if it was, my reply is probably just going to be awkwardly embarrassing…

Anyway, I will add a link to my review for The Last Magician in just a hot second, because I actually need to transfer it to this blog first. Edit: here’s the link!

Sorry, this is random, I’m just so damn excited!!
